Rain Viewer Now Supports Multiple Forecast Models

Rain Viewer Adds Multiple Forecast Models | Rain Viewer Blog

Weather forecasting isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different weather models analyze the atmosphere in unique ways, leading to variations in predictions. Now, with Rain Viewer’s latest feature, you can switch between multiple forecast models to get a more complete picture of what’s coming your way. The update is available in versions 6.6 (iOS) and 6.9 (Android).

What Are Weather Models?

Weather models are advanced computer simulations that predict atmospheric changes based on current conditions. They process massive amounts of data, including temperature, wind, pressure, and humidity, to generate forecasts for different regions and timeframes.

As each model uses distinct methods and resolution levels, forecasts can vary. Comparing models can help you make more informed weather decisions.

Which Models Are Available in Rain Viewer?

Rain Viewer now supports four major global and regional weather models:

  • ICON (Global Model): Developed by the German Weather Service (DWD), ICON provides a broad, detailed view of global weather patterns with a resolution of 13 km.
  • ICON-EU (European Model): A high-resolution version of ICON, covering Europe with a 7 km resolution. Ideal for short-term forecasts in Europe, offering more localized predictions.
  • ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts): One of the most respected models worldwide, ECMWF runs at a 9 km resolution and excels at long-range forecasting and storm tracking.
  • GFS (Global Forecast System): Operated by NOAA in the U.S., GFS has a 22 km resolution and is frequently updated. It’s widely used for long-term forecasting across the globe.

Why These Models?

We’ve chosen these models because they provide a balance between global reach, accuracy, and regional precision. Whether you’re tracking a storm, planning a trip, or just curious about the forecast, switching between models helps you compare different perspectives and gain deeper weather insights.
