We are happy to introduce RainViewer 5.0! Sure, you might have spotted our slick new app icon, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve supercharged RainViewer with two brand new map layers.
With these layers, you can view 24-hour precipitation and temperature forecasts directly on the map, all over the world, including your saved locations. You can conveniently view the forecasts and move between different points in time with our animation player.
But how are such long-term forecasts on the map actually possible? This magic is powered by the GEFS (Global Ensemble Forecast System) weather model. While the familiar radar and satellite layers display the forecast for the next 2 hours, the mathematical layers offer a 24-hour glimpse into the future. You can use them to:
- Plan your packing. Visualize the temperature at your upcoming vacation or weekend getaway spot. No more last-minute packing dilemmas – you’ll know whether to pack a sweater or a swimsuit.
- Track long-term precipitation. See where a storm will be during the next 24 hours – perfect for both storm chasers and those who prefer to avoid storms. Tailor your plans based on your interests and hobbies.
Improved Layer Management
With the addition of new layers, we’ve also revamped the layer menu. It now includes brief descriptions of each available map layer, making it easier to choose the right one for your needs.
We’ve also added a “Show recent layers on map” option. When this option is active, the map displays the recent four layers as tabs, allowing for quick switching between them.
